It’s time for another dose of the “Your New Normal” series, designed to help you make simple changes to become healthier and happier. Each month I share the theme; a habit to change and I post a few articles on the topic to give you a bit of encouragement to make the change.
This month’s topic is near and dear to me – sugar. More specifically, reducing the amount of sugar we consume. It’s a change that has had such a positive impact on my life that I really want to share that with others and help you make the change too!
Why do you keep going on about quitting sugar?
I’ll tell you a little secret. I actually used to love sugar. I had the SWEETEST tooth ever. I favoured dessert over main and could polish off a family block of chocolate in one sitting. I loved lollies – fizzy cola bottles, jubes, bananas…yummo!
I used to tell myself I was healthy. I was the kind of person who would sweeten things with honey or cook with agave. I would eat a banana, mandarin and apple for morning tea cause “fruit is healthy”. I loved muesli bars. I used to work out at the gym for an hour or run 10km then eat some junk because “hey I worked out”. I counted calories. I counted grams of fat. At times I even kept a food diary for kicks.
But fundamentally something in me wasn’t working.
I will save you the whole story again (but please check out my Confessions from a Chocoholic if you missed it!), but after years of stomach troubles, migraines and misdiagnosis from doctors, living with IBS and struggling to fall pregnant – once I quit sugar….everything changed.
No IBS, no counting calories, no crazy workouts. Just appreciating (and enjoying!) real food and eating for nourishment.
Fast forward a couple of years time and not only have I now been ‘Fructose free” for nearly 2 years but I’m now mostly gluten free, preservative free and even make my own fermented foods. Go figure!
Who knows what changes it may bring about in you!
Let me say straight out I’m not saying quitting sugar is going to solve all your life’s problems. I’m simply suggesting that maybe there is a healthier way to be. I don’t think that’s too far fetched?
And the main thing I want to emphasise here is that if I can do it – anyone can.
I’m not special, I don’t have amazing willpower and most of all, before I made the change I was just like anyone who eats sugar. I started in the same place you might be in now.
Have I got you yet? If not, keep reading!
But why is sugar so bad?
Where do I start? Firstly lets clarify that we are talking about fructose here, not glucose.
So the table sugar you put in your tea or baking is half fructose, half glucose. You with me?
Why is it bad? Well it makes you overeat, it’s addictive, it feeds cancer, it can interfere with your immune system, cause mood swings…is that enough? For some more info on all this, visit this great post on IQS.
Don’t even get me started on children’s foods and the impact on their health and behaviour.
Not only that, a lot of the time the foods we buy that contain sugar also contain a whole heap of other nasties. But that’s another post for another day.
I wont go anymore into specifics, however some great articles include:

Ok ok – so what’s my habit to change?
It would be very easy for me to say – well stop eating sugar! But we all know it’s not that easy and it ain’t gonna happen (not to say I don’t have faith in you guys).
So I’m going to provide a little bit of gentle encouragement and give you one very easy thing to do. It’s fun and not anything to change.
Just go watch “That Sugar Film”.
Seriously, it is that good. If you watch that and do nothing about your diet afterwards….then I was never going to change your mind anyway :)
Have you seen the movie? What did you think – did it make you change anything you normally eat?
PERTH Followers – there is a screening in Warwick on 23rd May – there needs to be more tickets sold for it to go ahead, so please check it out!
