Where do you sit in the health stakes – are you paleo? Sugar free? Flexitarian? Not sure? Don’t care?
As you know I’ve “quit sugar” and as this has had such a positive impact on my health, I like to share my experiences. I generally refer to myself as “sugar free” and as you’ve seen from my posts, written about how I Quit Sugar. In general though I try not to label myself (or others) and would say I follow a wholefoods diet, rather than just saying “sugar free”.
But….everyone always focuses on the sugar.
And how ridiculous it is not to eat it.
And how crazy I must be, to not be eating it.
They wonder if I’m in some sort of cult, where Sarah Wilson is our leader, slapping us on the hand as we reach for a piece of cake and shoving a glass of kombucha into the other.
So all this in mind, I’ve been thinking about how using this terminology can “divide” people and stop them from hearing the true message. So today I wanted to change tack a little, in the hope I might make some of you see things in a new way. So today I want to tell you why I don’t think you should quit sugar…not exactly!
Hang on, why shouldn’t I quit sugar? You have right?
Well yes, sort of. I read the Sarah Wilson “I Quit Sugar” book and I gave up excess fructose consumption. I still eat things that contain fructose, such as some fruits and occasionally I may even eat dessert that I know has sugar in it. Occasionally.
By cutting down on fructose and being aware of what I’m eating, I’ve naturally transitioned to eating more vegetables and home made (i.e. preservative and sugar free!) foods. Which I think sounds fairly reasonable…and not extreme?
So why are you telling us not to quit sugar?
The phrase “I quit sugar” has become trendy and the divide between those who’ve quit and those who haven’t is widening. And geez do people get passionate about it.
I read a lot of blogs (and facebook comments!) and there is an equal amount of passion on both sides of the argument. Those who have quit are extremely passionate in sharing how it has changed their lives and why you should try it too. Sometimes they can be a little overbearing (sorry).
Equally, people who still eat the white stuff also jump onto any posts where someone makes fun of quitting sugar, or paleo, or whatever. They ask what is wrong with people, why are they going on these extreme “diets” and throw around phrases such as “a piece of cake never hurt anyone”.
Which I totally agree, it didn’t. Well not that I know of at least.
Anyone who hasn’t “given up” sugar will also say how sad it is that we are on such a restrictive diet and can’t have treats. They may say things like “you only live once”, “why are these people so sad”, “it doesn’t make sense”, “just go have a wine”, “why is Sarah Wilson’s hair so nice” and it’s “not safe” to eat such a restrictive diet.
Which is why I need to tell you, that quitting sugar doesn’t actually mean that you give up eating nice food. Or living. And you do not have to join a cult.
If you make the choice to reduce your fructose consumption, then you naturally can still eat WHATEVER you like – whether Sarah Wilson or Pete Evans says it’s ok or not.
You can still eat cake, muffins, chocolate or anything that tickles your fancy. You won’t get banned from the “movement”. In fact, no one else will even know or care, unless you take to social media.
Using the term “quitting” makes it sound so restrictive and as if you are in fact giving up part of your life. So how about if I said “reducing your fructose consumption” – doesn’t have the same ring to it, but is exactly what you are doing.
“That Sugar Film” is an excellent portrayal of a balanced view on sugar consumption. The main thing we all need to be aware of is the hidden sugars in our food and not to be blinded by advertising. If you are aware of that and can make things yourself or cut down on packaged goods – then that is a big step.
Perhaps if we all stop thinking about it as an “all or nothing” approach, then there will be less opposition. For me, I had to go through a process of actually cutting out fructose and reintroducing a reduced amount, as I really was addicted and could not stop a one piece of chocolate or a single lolly. I was a true sweet tooth and chocoholic.
Others may be different and maybe you can follow a low fructose diet most of the time and have dessert every now and again. Once you cut fructose you may not want to, as your tastebuds change – however you can if you want. Don’t let me tell you what to do.
I myself, don’t like Cadbury anymore and many desserts are simply too sweet for me. Which is totally crazy, as I in my former life I could eat a packet of lollies or a block of chocolate in one sitting. Yes – by myself.
So do whatever works for you. But please, don’t let a buzzword you are against on principle stop you from making a positive dietary change.
