Lipstick and lip-gloss are beauty products many women apply each day without thinking. I certainly love a good lip-gloss, it’s all you need some days to brighten things up! But did you know a lot of these products contain harmful chemicals?
Say it isn’t so Kristy! Sorry…but it’s true :(
What’s in Lipstick?
As with all beauty products, your lipstick or gloss may contain pretty nasty ingredients. Some of the worst are:
- Artificial colours: which can contain lead and aluminium
- Synthetic fragrances: derived from petrochemicals
These ingredients have been linked to cancer, reduced sperm count, allergies, asthma, learning difficulties and headaches amongst other things.
Why is that bad? It’s just on my lips isn’t it?
If only that were true! In a study by the European Scientific Commission they calculated that the average lipstick wearer consumes up to 400 lipsticks in a lifetime! Eek!!
If you think about how often you apply lip gloss or lip stick (well if you are anything like me!), as well as how often you lick your lips it’s no surprise really…
How do you know what’s ok to use?
As with everything I talk about, it’s very important to read the ingredients to understand if you are comfortable with what you are wearing. Avoid the items listed above and use the EWG Skin Deep database or The Chemical Maze to determine the hazard level. To be sure you are going chemical free you really must read the label yourself, don’t assume just because it is from a “Health Food” shop it is ok, as it may very well not be!
I could also argue you could easily avoid the problem by not wearing lipstick or lip-gloss…however for me that really wasn’t an option! I really do love my lip gloss…but I digress…
So – what do you wear then Kristy?
My favourite lipgloss prior to educating myself on this chemical business was a Maybelline product, which is a moderate hazard according to EWG. It contains fragrance and citral, which have various negative health implications. As I applied it several times every.single.day – this was concerning!
I wanted to find some alternative products that were safe for me to use, however still had a nice colour and feel. I tried a few brands, but wasn’t happy until I found Luk Beautifoods. Their 100% Pure Juicy Lip Gloss in Caramel is my fav now! It’s the main reason I rave about Luk Beautifoods – I tried (and wasted money on) so many others that I wasn’t happy with, it was great to find something I loved again.
For other suggestions of brands to try, please see my previous post listing some other companies I’m yet to try, but have heard good things about.
To help encourage you all to make the switch to a healthier alternative, Luk Beatifoods has very kindly provided three of their gorgeous Lip Nourish’s to give away!
I have the chai shimmer, vanilla & cinnamon and orange & juniper shades to give away. To check out the colours, have a look here.

And that’s it! Three lucky people will score a Lip Nourish to replace their existing lippie with some natural beauty. Good luck!
