For you guys who don’t exactly know what a blog or a blogger really is, I thought I would explain my whereabouts for the last few days and tell you what it’s like to go to the annual Problogger Event (or PBEvent 2014) from the eyes of someone who:
a) Was a first time attendee
b) Had only started a blog 5 weeks ago
c) Had only ever been to accounting conferences
Firstly Tell Us – What is a Blog?
Don’t quote me on this one, this is just my definition. A blog is when you create a place to share what you’re into. Simple! A really nice quote from the notebooks we received from Problogger is:
“If you have just one reader and your blog changes their life, your blog is big enough”.
Then What is a Blogg-er?
I’m not exactly sure at what point you can call yourself a blogger…or if I’m there yet…but for the purposes of this post, I:
a) Have a blog
b) Actively write posts on it, so let’s say I’m a blogger.
What do you Blogger Type Folk do at this Conference?
Glad you asked. It’s pretty awesome….
You attend presentations on all manner of things:
No stone was left unturned as we delved into:
* Inspirational presentations discussing setting goals & believing in your ability;
* Informative sessions on how to plan and be organised
* Using social media for social good
* Mysterious things like SEO, Google + & unicorns (albeit briefly).
Eat Cool Stuff
I was lucky enough to attend a delicious breakfast where the lovely Pure Harvest girls made us smoothies in cute mason jars. I was also sure to sample some delish muffins (note plural). Nice!
There are People Whose Focus is to Make you Happy
There were “happiness coordinators” looking after us. What do they do? Well as the name suggests, their only purpose was to make sure everyone was happy. WHAT?!
You use technology. A LOT.
You can use your phones. Hang on…we can use our phones? Yes! It is a necessity! As an accountant who would suffer (and give!) death states if a phone was used during a presentation, I had to change my mindset…it took a good day for that to happen…
Platforms of choice: Twitter & Instagram (& probably others I don’t even know of).
Tools of choice: Apple devices, laptops, cameras & portable charging devices!!!!
Note: I feel obliged to let you guys in on a little secret. I didn’t really know how to tweet before the event (I KNOW – don’t tell anyone, my street cred will go down). But once I worked it out I was tweeting like a boss – appropriate hashtags included (well mostly).
Also, I was guilty of taking pictures of things, just because I found them interesting…not thinking to put them on Instagram. Rookie error.
Everyone talks. A LOT
I imagine most people would assume at a blogging conference you wouldn’t meet that many people. After all, blogging is hiding behind a computer screen right? WRONG!
I have never been to an event with so many lovely, happy people. I spoke so much my throat hurts! Everyone was so friendly and helpful and I can honestly say I met the most AMAZING people. I was planning on listing them here but there are so many I will do a separate post on it!
You Win cool Stuff
You Have a Party
We enjoyed an “Ahoy” themed party and had many pictures taken. I snuck off fairly early as my brain was exploding from all the information I had acquired (not from the wine)!
So you had a good time then?!
Yes! The event was so well organised, the speakers so amazing, the people awesome…all in all the best conference I’ve ever been to! Thanks Darren & the team at Problogger….and all the presenters…and the attendees…and the QT…& the Shore (where I stayed)..and Virgin…and Olympus…and Pure Harvest…see you next year!
