Here we are in the final week of my series “The Get Healthy and Happy Project”. We have heard from so many inspirational people, each with an individual approach to following a “healthy” lifestyle. I hope that reading the different responses has encouraged you to realise there is no one way to be healthy; it is entirely up to you.
This week I wanted to summarise what we have covered, please be sure to check out all the lovely ladies interviews and their websites to find out more about them! Everyone I featured has influenced my own health in some way, so I genuinely value their input and cannot thank them enough!
Ok – so what have we learnt?
The main takeaway is just to do something to move towards being your best you! But let’s have a look at the different areas we covered.
Approach to Food/Eating
Although the specific individual approaches to food (if we want to label, let’s say JERF, Paleo, Raw, Wholefoods…those terms should cover it!) were different – the underlying focus is the same. Everyone mentioned they focus on nourishing their bodies, eating whole foods – as close to natural as possible. Avoid refined and processed foods (and the preservatives and sugars that come with it) and get back to basics!
When they started eating like this
The message I really want to convey here is that NOT ONE of the lovely ladies I interviewed has always had the same approach to their diet. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. has made a choice to change and become healthier. Anyone can do it; you just have to find the motivation to!
Start small and anything is possible!
Everyone also said it didn’t happen overnight and they just made small steps towards their goal.
The main thing I took away from this question (so listen up!) is that no one listed anything complicated, extravagant or material as what makes them happy. Each person‘s “happy place” was spending time with loved ones, getting back to nature or just getting outside in the fresh air.
Also, almost everyone mentioned being present in the moment and taking time to appreciate life as key things that make them happy…which makes sense to me!
Try and remember the things that make us the happiest are generally so simple – so we can all take time to do them.
If you followed the series, you will know each week I highlighted a key message from each of the interviews…so I thought I would copy them all here for some inspiration for you!
‘All you need is less’ – Rachael from Rachaelallanah.com
‘To find what makes you happy, our advice is just to begin’ – Carla & Emma from The Merrymaker Sisters
‘Try shopping at farmers markets on the weekends for the freshest seasonal produce and take in how happy, friendly and relaxed most people are at the markets. It’s a very addictive lifestyle’ – Jenine from Foodness For Goodness Sake
‘Start with what you are comfortable with…..it’s never too late to change and evolve’ – Sarah from The Raw Food Mum
“Our palates can change and adapt to new tastes it just may take some time, be gentle with yourself and don’t give up” – Caryn from A Little Bag of Sunshine
“Just taking small steps in the right direction will make such a difference, and once you’ve set your plan and can see the light at the end of the tunnel, it is so incredibly motivating. But no one can do it for you; it’s got to be YOU that makes it happen!” – Jenine from Mums With Bubs Fitness
I really hope you have enjoyed hearing from everyone I featured and have learnt a little about some different approaches to diet. I would just love it if as a result of following this series we have inspired someone to make a change!
So tell me, have you made any changes because of this project? I will take any change, no matter how small!
And if you’re on Instagram don’t forget to add #healthierhappier to your pictures that show how you live “healthy and happy”!
